Graduate Studies
The Women's Studies Department and Program at the University of
Maryland enjoys a global reputation for new methodologies and exciting
new research that expands the depth and reach of knowledge on women's
lives. UM is one of only ten universities in the United States to offer
a doctoral degree in this field of study.
The Ph.D. program offers four areas of studies for
doctoral students. The Race
and Racialization area offers students in-depth
exposure to Black Women’s Studies, and/or Ethnic and Diaspora Studies
(Asian, Latina, Jewish). The Art, Culture and Social Change area’s
focus is both local and global while students examine literature
and arts activism; feminist, human rights and civil rights movements;
or political economy and social justice. In the Bodies, Gender
and Sexualities area,
students interrogate the politics of women’s health; lesbian
and queer theory; masculinities; or technoscience; The Gendered
Labor, Households and Communities area challenges
students to investigate women’s
roles in economic systems of labor and/or the family and domestic units in local or national communities.
Within a concentration, students work with Women’s Studies core and affiliate
faculty to design an interdisciplinary course of study that readies the student
for original dissertation research. While the program is crafted to prepare students
for academic careers, the Women’s Studies Ph.D. is applicable to a wide
range of professional arenas that can take advantage of the tremendous range
of skills learned during doctoral studies.
