Other Graduate Program Requirements
Graduate Program Language Requirement
Doctoral students must show competency in a language other than English by summarizing in English a 10-page article in the major field and translating one paragraph word-for-word. The exam will be administered and graded pass/fail by one department or affiliate faculty fluent in the language. International students who passed the TOEFL and anyone who has passed an intermediate college-level course within the last five years are exempted from this requirement. The language requirement must be completed before advancement to candidacy. Contact the Graduate Director to arrange to take the exam or request exemption.
Graduate Studies Interdisciplinary Paper
Doctoral students are required to produce a 35-page interdisciplinary research paper.
After completing WMST 621, students entering with a bachelor's degree are required to take WMST 799, no later than the fifth semester. The 3 to 6-credit WMST 799 provides students with the opportunity to write or revise an already written seminar paper under the direction of one of our faculty. For students who wish to receive a master's degree at this stage, this interdisciplinary paper may serve as a master's thesis. (See section on Theses and Dissertations).
Students entering with a master's degree or graduate certificate in Women's Studies are not required to take WMST 799; instead they may write this paper for a seminar assignment, or they may choose to do an independent study to write or revise an already written paper.
Portfolio for Assessment of Continuation in Graduate Program (Ph.D.)
A portfolio will include the following:
- Brief student statement of work completed and future plans (2-4 pages)
- Copy of transcript
- Faculty's written evaluations of student's required course work
- General examination
- Interdisciplinary paper
- Evidence of or a plan for language requirement completion
Students' portfolios must be completed and submitted to the Graduate Director by the end of the fifth semester. By the end of the sixth semester, the departmental faculty will have reviewed each portfolio to determine if the student should continue in the program and will have notified the student of her/his status.
