Mel Michelle Lewis attends the University of Maryland as a PhD student in Women’s Studies. Currently, her research focuses on pedagogical praxis and embodied text at the intersections of Black queer theory and Black feminist thought. She enjoys teaching courses at UMD and is an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Mel maintains activist and professional consulting connections with national, local, and university based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender programs and non-profits, as well as organizations that serve communities of color.
Mel is also a 2009 Honors Humanities Doctoral Teaching Fellow at the University of Maryland.
Mel attended Goucher College as a Rosenberg scholar in Dance and holds a dual bachelors degree in sociology and women’s studies. She acquired her MS in applied women’s studies with a concentration in public policy at Towson University in May of 2005, and completed an MA in women’s studies in the area of Bodies, Genders, and Sexualities from the University of Maryland in May of 2008.
